Treatment
There are two main types of treatment for OCD, however, these treatments may not result in a cure but they may help to bring symptoms under control.
The two main treatments for OCD are psychotherapy and medications. Psychotherapy exposure and response prevention (ERP) has proven the most effective treatment for OCD. This type of therapy involves being exposed to the feared obsession or object gradually, like being exposed to
germs by shaking someone’s hand. The therapy also teaches strategies to assist with managing
anxiety, techniques such as, relaxation training, slow breathing techniques, meditation and
hyperventilation control can help a person to manage their own symptoms.
Psychotherapy can be arranged in individual, family or group sessions.
Medications
Antidepressant medications are usually tired first to assist with controlling the obsessions and
compulsions of OCD.
There can be some side effects and risks associated with taking antidepressant medication, these do
not affect everyone:-
Side effects. Stomach upset, sleep disturbance, sweating
Suicide risk. In some cases, children, teenagers and young adults under 25 may have an
increase in suicidal thoughts
Interactions with other substances. Some medications can have dangerous interactions with
other medications, foods, alcohol or other substances.
